Who you are
- An attention to detail, client-focused mentality, and the ability to balance commercial interests against legal realities are essential
- Experience in negotiating a variety of complex agreements and an understanding of basic contract principles
- An ability to develop the legal team’s negotiation playbook and keep it updated according to industry standards and regulatory developments
- Strong understanding of agreement terms and its impact across different internal teams and the company as a whole
- Familiarity with the types of institutional clients we serve, from traditional financial institutions to venture capital funds to protocols
- Have a deep knowledge of the strategy of Anchorage Digital and its various business lines
- Actively engage with different groups to work on understanding historical transactions as well as requirements for executing on go-forward global strategy
- Able to communicate complex issues clearly and credibly across a wide range of audiences
- Communicate, organize and execute on cross-team goals and projects, by advising internal teams to solve legal issues during negotiations
- A J.D. degree and at least 5 years of experience
- A background in drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts, and are comfortable interacting with sophisticated institutional clients and counterparties
- Demonstrated experience working closely with the business and other cross functional teams to build new products, solve complex issues, and strategize growth
- Enthusiasm for crypto and a foundational understanding of the crypto industry and applicable laws/regulations both in the U.S. and internationally
- Demonstrated close attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects
- The ability to execute with minimal supervision and balance commercial and legal realities

What the job involves
- As Member of Legal (Senior Counsel, Commercial), you will be an integral member of the legal team, helping us to memorialize our relationships with our institutional clients in ways that stand the test of time
- We are looking for an experienced commercial attorney to work with the business to negotiate and execute a wide range of commercial agreements with our clients, from custody to staking to settlement
- We have created the following Factors of Growth & Impact to help the Senior Counsel, Commercial better measure impact and articulate the coaching, feedback, and rich and rewarding learning that will take place while the Senior Counsel, Commercial explores, develops, and masters the capabilities and contributions of the role:
- Manage internal and external timeline for agreement turnaround time
- Assist in improving existing agreements and implementing changes cross-functionally
- Monitor client agreement workflows and advise as the primary legal counsel for workflows
- Work with the business to manage intake and provide an excellent client onboarding experience

Financial backing for Anchorage has come from prestigious investors Visa and Andreessen Horowitz. Anchorage's broad offerings are set to be matched by plans to partner across a wide spread of neobanks, challenger & incumbent banks, and corporate treasurers. This would mean an impressive expansion of their already substantial domain of influence in a rapidly developing sector.
In early 2021, Anchorage secured a national trust charter from the OCC, making it the first-ever federally chartered digital asset bank. This is significant, as it provides a good barrier to entry for other companies looking to compete in this space, and gives legacy institutions the ability to offer digital asset access to their clients. Though it has raised considerable funding in the past, crypto instability and wider macroeconomic challenges forced Anchorage to cut 20% of its staff in March 2023. 2022 clampdowns on customer due dilligence internal controllers added to the pressure on Anchorage to streamline and refocus its efforts.
