Company mission

To make managing retirement investments cheaper, simpler and safer.

Role

Who you are

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on CI/CD, DevOps, or Developer Experience roles
  • Strong experience with Jenkins, Groovy pipeline scripts, and scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or JavaScript
  • Experience with Terraform or similar IaC tools
  • Proficiency with AWS cloud services, including EC2, S3, and other relevant tools for scalable infrastructure
  • Proficiency in working with Linux environments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams
  • Proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues, with a focus on continuous improvement

Desirable

  • Docker and Containerization experience (or other similar services) for containerization practices, ensuring efficient deployment and management of services

What the job involves

  • We are seeking a Senior Developer Experience (DevEx) Software Engineer to join our team
  • The DevEx team is focused on the overall experience for all of the Engineers at Vestwell by improving the tooling, infrastructure and documentation that we use to produce software
  • In this role, you will be responsible for enhancing our existing Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) infrastructure, empowering our developers and test engineers to write, test, and deploy code more efficiently
  • You will work closely with our SDET team, DevOps team, and agile Engineering Squads to streamline the development lifecycle and drive operational excellence
  • Improve and maintain our CI/CD pipeline built on Jenkins using groovy pipeline scripts, ensuring robust and scalable processes that reduce the time and effort required for code integration and deployment
  • Develop and maintain automation tools and scripts in Python, Bash, and JavaScript to support CI/CD operations where existing solutions fall short
  • Collaborate on capturing GitHub settings and permissions in code using Terraform, ensuring a consistent and reproducible environment
  • Act as a key resource for development teams, helping to resolve CI/CD-related issues, and providing guidance on best practices
  • Work closely with DevOps to align on goals and objectives, and with engineering teams to understand their workflows and improve their development experience
  • Advocate for and implement new technologies and practices that will drive efficiency and innovation within our development processes
  • Create and maintain documentation on CI/CD processes and tools, and conduct training sessions to upskill the engineering team

Application process

  • It starts the same for every candidate: getting to know the team members through 1 - 2 conversations about Vestwell, your experience, and your interests
  • Next steps can vary by role, but the usual next steps are a skill or experience screen (e.g. a coding interview for an Engineer, a portfolio review for a Designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in-person interview panel after that if the screens go well
  • Before making an offer, our interview process concludes with a references check stage for your recruiter to meet with a current or former supervisor and peer

Our take

The current landscape of 401(k) retirement plans is stagnant in comparison to the standards of financial software innovation. Vestwell offers a digital record-keeping platform that works directly with wealth management firms to help workplaces save money on their employee retirement plans. Vestwell does this by removing the friction points financial advisors and companies have in establishing and maintaining defined contribution and benefit programs.

The startup faces competition from legacy players such as Boston-based Fidelity Investments who currently keep track of almost $2 trillion in assets in the industry. Furthermore, Empower also focuses on advisor-friendly and customized web tools and functionality, presenting further competition to Vestwell.

Despite this, Vestwell is uniquely positioned to disrupt the stagnant 401(k) system, a stance only strengthened by its substantial rounds of funding through the 2020s. This has been invested into expanding platform functionality and servicing for its partners and clients, releasing two new products in September 2022 - Vestwell Flex and a TPA portal. These additions will make Third Party Administration partnerships more efficient for Vestwell customers, streamlining the recordkeeping systems necessary for such actions. Continued product updates like these will help Vestwell keep pace with its substantial competition.
