  • Experience using or building agents, telemetry collectors, or related tools and services
  • Experience using or building observability products and/or developer tools, either internally as an SRE or for external customers
  • Experience with open source software and/or commercial open source companies
  • Experience working with engineering teams to design and build products in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience with eBPF technologies
  • Experience working with observability or data pipelines
  • Experience working with or building ETL tools
  • Experience partnering with UX to build delightful features with solid designs
  • Familiarity with building an ecosystem of high quality integrations with third-parties

What the job involves

  • As a Product Manager at Grafana Labs, you'll develop a vision and strategy for your product domain
  • You will own your product’s roadmap, collateral, and market research, and you will collaborate with Grafana leadership on fine-tuning your product’s goals
  • You will be the primary advocate and expert in your area, with a strong ability to communicate needs, functionality, and details effectively both to external customers and internal stakeholders
  • The teams and people you will be interacting with will be 100% remote and globally distributed, so strong and proactive communication is essential
  • Product Managers are the bridge that connect Engineering, Design, and UX to GTM
  • You are a facilitator who ensures the free flow of information across these teams and are expected to be technically proficient when representing our products to our customers
  • As the Product Manager for Grafana Alloy – Core, you’ll be responsible for the service that sits at the heart of the Grafana observability stack
  • Alloy is our branded distribution of the OpenTelemetry collector with a configuration language inspired by Terraform
  • Uniquely, it’s our version of a “big-tent” collector – open-source and vendor-neutral with 100% OTLP compatibility, while being optimized for Prometheus
  • Alloy is designed to be flexible, performant, and compatible with multiple ecosystems such as OTel, Prometheus/Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope
  • In your role as PM, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the long-term success of the Alloy OSS project, working with your engineering counterparts to fine-tune the strategy
  • You’ll have to solve problems and prioritize use cases across our entire use base, from OSS users with niche scenarios to some of our largest Cloud customers with enterprise requirements
  • Your areas of influence will also cover other agents, collectors, and ingestion services like Grafana Beyla, our OSS eBPF auto-instrumentation tool, and figuring out how to better incorporate and integrate these tools with Alloy
  • You’ll have to chart a roadmap that grows the OSS project, addresses internal requirements from other product teams, and delivers on end-user solutions with strong recommendations that make Alloy the de-facto collector alongside Grafana’s LGTM stack
  • Transform ideas and feedback into a product vision and roadmap
  • Empathize with customer problems in order to collect user needs, requirements, and pain points
  • Curate and properly represent user feedback to Engineering, while providing evidence to support tradeoffs and priorities
  • Work closely with PMM to enable GTM on product differentiation, including creating and updating presentations, documentation, website content, datasheets, and whitepapers
  • Use your deep product expertise to make decisions about our go-to-market strategies, pricing, packaging, licensing and tiering

Otta's take

Sam Franklin

CEO of Otta

Observability plays a crucial role in software development, where dashboards are pivotal for monitoring the health of IT infrastructure across an organization. However, for developers, the frustration of spending unnecessary time navigating between different dashboards to find the latest information detracts from valuable programming time.

Grafana collaborates closely with its clients to create customizable observability platforms, striving to enhance efficiency in observability. Its offerings include cloud-based data structures, dashboards, API plugins, and collaboration tools. Currently, FGrafana boasts over 21M active instances and approximately 10M users globally, with a customer base exceeding 2,000, including prominent names like Bloomberg, PJ Morgan Chase, eBay, PayPal, and Sony.

While Grafana provides free plans with a simplified tool package, the Grafana Enterprise Stack offers customized observability solutions on a monthly subscription basis. The company's ongoing strategy revolves around continually improving Grafana to meet users' demands, enhancing functionality with each iteration, and fostering community engagement by enabling users to share their Grafana dashboards with the broader open-source community.
