Role

Who you are

  • 4+ years of experience creating UX content for software as a service (Saas) products
  • Excellent writing skills, with a strong understanding of English grammar and mechanics
  • Familiarity with principles of information architecture, content modeling, and taxonomy
  • Experience complying with and contributing to brand voice and tone standards
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of accessibility and inclusion in your content
  • An understanding of how content design drives business growth
  • Experience working in an agile development environment
  • Working knowledge of design methods and tools, including Figma
  • Samples of your work and process, from writing and designing to research and documentation
  • A track record of living our values: be real, aim high, start with customers, ask why, and own it

What the job involves

  • As a Senior Content Designer, you’ll lead content design for a handful of our product teams. You’ll help drive the vision for their content and partner with your teammates to conceive, design, and build better experiences
  • You’ll use language to help customers get things done. You’ll design information for the way their brains consume it. You’ll organize content for discovery and findability, and you’ll create systems for categorizing and relating things. You’ll make our experiences more accessible and inclusive, name and label features so people understand what they’re getting, and maintain standards that keep Vimeo consistent
  • You’ll report to the Director of Content Design. Besides using language to solve big UX problems, you’ll also promote best practices, foster understanding among your colleagues, and advocate for better content design across Vimeo. You’ll share what you know with other content designers and contribute to the growth of our human-centered content design practice
  • Lead content design for your product teams. Become an expert in their features, functionality, and business objectives — and an authority on their customers and content
  • Know your customers. Conduct content discovery, including inventories, audits, and competitive research. Collaborate on card sorts, user surveys, interviews, and workshops
  • Help define a shared vision. Work with your product teams to align customer needs with business objectives — and plan new products, features, and enhancements that achieve both
  • Co-own the design process. Pair up with product designers from requirements to release, creating and iterating on design concepts, user flows, prototypes, components, and patterns
  • Write useful, usable, and inclusive interface content. Craft clear, accessible copy for dialogs, empty states, alerts, tooltips, help text, navigation labels, onboarding, and more
  • Test, evaluate, and improve your content. Use analytics, customer success data, and methods like A/B testing, readability testing, usability testing, and navigation model testing
  • Build collaborative, trusting relationships. Champion good content design while bringing together product managers, designers, engineers, and marketers around shared priorities
  • Level up the content design craft at Vimeo. Create, contribute to, and evolve our standards, guidelines, methods, tools, tutorials, presentations, and review sessions

Our take

Vimeo was founded by filmmakers who wanted an efficient way to share videos with others. It is more creator-oriented than YouTube, with professional software, technology, and tools for creators to produce, share, and sell their videos.

In 2007, it became the first online video sharing site to support HD playback for consumers, updating to 4K playback in 2016. Vimeo's app has also been updated to allow recording and live streaming as well as watching video. This service is aimed predominantly at enterprise customers although they have millions of small-time users too.

Vimeo has risen to become the world's biggest ad-free open video platform, with significant funding that has allowed it to expand operations and build up the business. Recently, however, the company has found itself struck by the effects of the economic downturn felt by much of the industry, and has been forced to reduce its workforce - a step taken to ensure it comes out of this rough time "a stronger company". On top of this, it received a hefty fine for failure to remove copyrighted content back in 2019, after losing an appeal against the initial ruling.

In 2024, Vimeo is rumoured to be in the process of acquisition by leading mobile app developer Bending Spoons, which could signify a major shift in the tech landscape.
