Who you are

  • As our next Technical Recruiter you should have 6+ years of technical recruiting experience in high-growth startups, plus:
  • You have previously evaluated candidates for a range of technical roles, across multiple levels, including technical leadership. You enjoy the challenge of finding world-class talent for hard-to-fill Software Engineering, Security, and Infrastructure roles
  • You're comfortable with ownership. Whatnot is one of the fastest-growing startups in history, and hiring is key to our success. You should feel comfortable moving uncomfortably fast, managing multiple roles, and being accountable for your work
  • You provide an incredible candidate experience. You sweat the small stuff but keep the big picture in mind. You know that a job search can be nerve-racking and you prioritize providing a more human experience for everyone that interacts with Whatnot during a hiring process
  • You’re extremely organized and can balance multiple competing priorities
  • You are data-focused. You measure pipeline health to balance your priorities and set hiring manager expectations

What the job involves

  • Identify strong candidates. You'll experiment by yourself or by working in tandem with hiring managers to reach out efficiently to potential candidates
  • Find or create new sources of talent. LinkedIn might be a good tool, but you'll always look for new and unique ways to source candidates
  • Screen candidates. You'll serve as the filter of the top of the funnel to increase the hiring team’s time and focus on interviewing the best candidates
  • Juggle a variety of roles at once. At any given time you could be managing the pipelines for and working on filling 5-10 (or more at times) open roles
  • Assist with developing job posts, hiring plans, and rubrics. You'll work with the hiring manager to tighten up job descriptions, screening rubrics, and guide the hiring process along the way
  • Iterate on candidate feedback. You'll smooth rough edges in the recruiting process by iterating on feedback from candidates or other signals
  • Cultivate relationships with individuals and groups. You'll help build personal relationships through introductions, references, or by facilitating participation with community groups
  • Emphasize diversity. You'll look for proven traditional and creative methods to bring new points of view to the team

Our take

The collectible toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectible toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars, and has also expanded to sports cards.

The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.

The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
