Company mission

To make the cloud a safer place for businesses.

Role

Who you are

  • Experience working with building and operating distributed systems and services
  • 5+ years of backend software engineering experience
  • Experience leading technical projects, working with distributed teams, and strong communication skills
  • Experience owning feature development end-to-end, troubleshooting issues, maintaining systems at scale and balancing feature development work with operational support
  • Experience with tech stack including:
  • Language: Python, Golang
  • Platform: AWS
  • Framework: Django, Spark
  • Storage / Data Pipelines: Postgres, Redis, ElasticSearch, Kafka, Parquet
  • You are someone who wants to make an impact. You are passionate about solving customer problems and have built up a base of skills in backend and distributed systems development to do so
  • You want to apply those skills on a problem that leaves the world in a better place
  • You will need to have excellent communication skills across both verbal and written mediums
  • You will need to be just as comfortable on a zoom call as writing a 1 pager project proposal to be shared across the team for technical feedback

Desirable

  • 2+ years Golang

What the job involves

  • We’re looking to add a Backend Engineer to our team of world class engineers
  • The individual in this role will shape and elevate our engineering teams within the Behavioral Security Products division. This role straddles the line of velocity and excellence
  • Build and maintain high-throughput, low-latency systems that process 100s of millions of events per day to enable detection to identify notable events
  • Enhance our frameworks for improving detection efficiency and effectiveness
  • Provide operational support to maintain a high level of system uptime and performance
  • Create a magical work environment with colleagues and memorable interview process for candidates
  • We are a scrappy team: we are building a new product from scratch - this means you should be comfortable with a level of uncertainty beyond what you’d find at a more mature company or even a more mature team at Abnormal
  • Not every project will come with a well defined PRD - that’s expected and we expect this engineer to go dig in and figure out what to do
  • This also means occasionally we’ll ask you to do things that may not strictly fit the role of a “backend engineer” - it might mean jumping on a customer call, or digging in to help fix a frontend bug

Our take

Fraud involving impersonation is one of the top causes of online financial crime. Criminal tactics like email account spoofing, where the criminal impersonates an official account to steal personal information or money, are rife. Abnormal Security is a startup aimed at handling these hyper-targeted and personalized email attacks by analyzing communications and identifying potential fraud before it can take place.

The fraud detection space is extremely competitive but Abnormal Security differentiates itself through its focus on the threat of impersonation rather than a spectrum of threats. This has allowed it to amass a wealth of data relating specifically to high-risk impersonation attacks, analyzing over 45,000 signals to detect any anomalies.

Its specialized approach has fueled rapid growth, leading to a $4B valuation after a Serice C Funding round. Now, Abnormal plans to double down on product development and expand internationally, prioritizing markets where data security laws necessitate a local presence. By staying focused on impersonation, Abnormal Security positions itself as a formidable force in the fight against online financial crime.
