Role

Who you are

  • 10+ years of product design experience, ideally with at least 3+ years of mobile design, ideally in the past 5 years
  • Comfortable with complexity: You’ve led the design of approachable, guided mobile experiences in complex domains that solved a suite of problems for customers
  • Product acumen: This role will contribute directly to business and product strategy. You should be comfortable working with executive stakeholders, and be able to demonstrate how you’ve shaped business decisions
  • Technical acumen: This role will require a deep understanding of our technical systems and how those translate to business outcomes. You’ll work directly with your engineering partners to improve the systems that power our customer experiences. You should understand the nuances between web and native mobile design and be comfortable switching between the two
  • High quality bar: This role will be a tireless advocate for our customers’ mobile experience with Gusto. You should be able to demonstrate how you’ve maintained design quality and accessibility across screen sizes, while shipping iteratively to deliver customer value early and often
  • Strong interaction designer: This role will require a deep understanding of mobile-first design and common mobile interaction patterns
  • Influential and patient: Gusto is on a journey to becoming a mobile first company. This role will need to lead through influence and help educate and advocate about the employer’s mobile experience
  • Accessibility minded: This role will proactively design with accessibility in mind, collaborating with engineering partners to advocate for inclusive design experiences, such as the importance of VoiceOver and color contrast as important mobile considerations
  • Comfortable with defining and re-designing the information architecture of a mobile application
  • Bonus: Have experience creating a mobile design system in concert with an existing web-first design system

  • We are passionate advocates for thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences and we believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful
  • Gusto is at a meaningful inflection point in our scale. We are launching a native mobile app experience for small business owners, and scaling a platform that other teams will use to solve small business problems
  • As the Senior Staff Product Designer, Mobile Core you will play a critical leadership role in the strategy and execution of our mobile vision for small business owners
  • You will collaborate with internal teams and serve a cross-organizational leader to streamline and simplify our mobile offering in coordination with Gusto web

  • Work with cross-functional partners in Product Management, Engineering, and Data Science to understand customer problems, key opportunities in the mobile domain, and define both the long term UX vision and also short term release
  • Manage the tradeoffs between quick wins, (i.e. mobile web views vs native features) as you build iteratively toward a stand-alone mobile solution
  • Develop and build upon a mobile design language that operates in concert with our Gusto web experiences
  • Collaborate with other designers on the Core Experiences team to understand how parallel workflows translate to our mobile experiences, and understand where they must differ
  • Drive company-wide impact through strengthening our teams’ collective understanding of designing mobile experiences
  • Collaborate with our Research, Data Science, and Customer Support teams to build a holistic understanding of customer needs, and make sure they’re shared with your teams to inform their thinking, build empathy, and inform prioritization decisions

Our take

For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.

The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 200,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. In 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.

Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that will see it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to consolidate its platform, for example by integrating with OpenComp to grant its users access to the company's Compensation Intelligence Platform.
