Company mission

To empower manufacturing teams to solve problems faster with the right data, at the right resolution, in front of the right people, in real time.

Role

Who you are

  • Demonstrated ability to operate at startup scale; ready to tackle evolving challenges that require incremental and fast-paced innovation
  • Deep care for the end-user experience and who approaches technical solutions from the end-user's perspective
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with most of that working on web backends, preferably with a JVM-based language. Front-end experience is an added bonus
  • Proven ability to communicate with fellow engineers and cross-functional partners – someone who knows their audience and adjusts accordingly
  • Strong track record of working on complex projects where data design and architecture is central to the customer experience; 5+ years of working with SQL and relational databases
  • Prior experience with manufacturing is not expected

What the job involves

  • Our backend engineers work closely with fellow engineers and our product team to extend the web application our customers use to make mission-critical decisions about their manufacturing lines
  • Engineers at Instrumental work closely with stakeholders and in some cases, customers, to build a deep empathy for the challenges that drive our innovation
  • Make an impact: You’ll work in a highly cross-functional, fast-paced, and iterative environment where you are empowered and expected to participate in fulfilling our company mission to eliminate half of the inefficiencies in manufacturing – a $12T problem
  • Deliver AI-powered features: As a backend engineer, you’ll deliver AI-powered tools that many of our customers did not know were possible. That includes working with our ML and front-end teams to translate complex AI concepts into easy-to-understand and actionable features
  • Learning and growth: Our unique approach to developing software means that you’ll have an opportunity to wear different hats across different projects while working with a massively supportive, low-ego team that values transparency and rapid iteration
  • This role requires authorization to access information that is subject to U.S. export control restrictions

Otta's take

Theo Margolius headshot

Theo Margolius

COO of Otta

Inefficiencies in manufacturing are widespread and costly, approximately to the tune of $8 trillion. Instrumental is a company improving the speed and quality of electronics hardware manufacturing through software identifying defects, cutting waste, work, development times, and improving communication and collaboration across organizations.

It opted for a “continuous scale” style contract with manufacturers, allowing the possibility to charge more based on volume, rather than renegotiating during annual renewal periods. Moreover, electronics is a huge global market, and Instrumental have been careful to offer solutions that work with high manufacture but low internet-connectivity facilities, like many in China.

The company closed a round of series C funding, which will be used to expand research development for new products. With brands including Axon, Bose, Cisco, and SolarEdge using Instrumental's cloud platform and AI already, it is likely this list will expand following investment.
