What the job involves

  • Etsy’s Runtime Site Reliability Engineering team is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer, to join us in our mission of building and supporting reliable large scale infrastructure
  • The SRE team owns several aspects of business critical infrastructure and services that enable developers to efficiently build and deliver code as well as support the uptime of etsy.com

  • This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Runtime SRE
  • This team’s mission is to build and support world-class infrastructure that is responsible for the availability and reliability of the core infrastructure that powers etsy.com and its mobile apps
  • The SRE team is committed to craft and maintain critical systems that power our 94M active buyers and 7.4M active sellers, with a goal of 99.95% uptime
  • You'll collaborate with leading SRE professionals to influence the future of how Etsy builds, deploys and maintains reliable infrastructure that can automatically scale to meet the needs of our customers
  • The SRE Team is dedicated to continuous improvement. All SREs are empowered and encouraged to enhance any system, even those not directly owned by your team
  • Develop and implement highly scalable and maintainable systems by contributing at multiple levels of our infrastructure stack using technologies like Chef, Terraform, Go, PHP, Prometheus, Consul and more…
  • Support the day-to-day operations of running a large scale application, including monitoring, measuring, and troubleshooting infrastructure and services

  • Develop automation and processes to enable teams to deploy, manage, configure, scale, and monitor their applications
  • Identify and implement application reliability and availability improvements
  • Lead and participate in a world-class incident resolution process designed around a blameless learning culture
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law

Our take

Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.

Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.

However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
