Company mission

To save engineering time and increases trust by letting data teams know when things break, what went wrong, and how to fix it — before an executive messages them about a broken dashboard.

Role

Who you are

  • If you’re excited to lead design at a fast-growing Series A startup, including the opportunity to eventually build a team, we’d love to hear from you
  • You have 5+ years of experience in product design, interaction design, UX design, and information architecture for SaaS products geared toward technical users
  • You love working closely with engineers to build amazing products, and understand when a quick fix to unblock the team vs a deep dive on a gnarly problem is needed
  • You excel at listening to customers and driving product direction based on their needs
  • You can balance moving quickly and unblocking engineers with longer term, strategic design decisions
  • You’re methodical and organized, and thrive in a role with a lot of variety in the day-to-day work

Desirable

  • Have experience designing for monitoring/observability platforms or tools used by data teams
  • Have worked in a startup environment
  • Have a strong portfolio showcasing your ability to solve complex user problems through design

What the job involves

  • As a Lead Product Designer at Metaplane, you’ll own the design process and strategy for the entire Metaplane platform
  • You’ll work with our customers to deeply understand the challenges that cause them to fight fires on a daily basis
  • Then you’ll collaborate with our co-founder and engineering team to research, scope, and design workflows that solve these problems
  • In doing so, you’ll help data teams preserve trust in the data that powers their entire business
  • The primary focus of this role will be designing interfaces and workflows that help data teams monitor what is most important across their data platform, visualize the behavior of their data over time, make sense of the dependencies between their data systems, and automate identifying and fixing data incidents
  • You’ll ensure we can ship software that transforms the way data engineers do their jobs every week
  • A day in the life:
  • 9:30 AM - Conduct a user interview with a data engineer to gather feedback on a flow that helps data engineers roll out monitors with less manual effort
  • 10:30 AM - Collaborate with the engineering team to prioritize what features we should focus on for a new integration
  • 11:30 PM - Strategize with the Head of Product about the product roadmap based on product usage data and customer feedback
  • 12:00 PM - Present mockups for a better onboarding flow at Metaplane’s All-Hands meeting
  • 1:30 PM - Heads-down design time
  • 3:30 PM - Problem-solve with an engineer about a technical constraint that popped up in a feature they’re working on
  • 4:00 PM - Chat with the customer success team to identify pain points and potential design solutions based on their recent conversations with users

Our take

The amount of data the companies process - and the number of tools available to handle it - has increased exponentially in recent years. While platforms exist to monitor the performance of data software, not much exists to monitor the data itself, leading to data used in business critical applications sometimes becoming unreliable and requiring time-consuming and expensive QA.

Metaplane positions itself as a "DataDog for data", targeting quality issues by using anomaly detection models to find issues in a customer's data stack in real time, including the data warehouses which the data comes from. This allows data teams to swiftly locate and triage issues, before erroneous data hits a dashboard. While there is a growing roster of competitors entering the observability space, including Cribl, Monte Carlo and Manta, Metaplane seeks to stand out with its focus on product data, where its proprietary algorithms outshine Meta's Prophet library used by most competitors.

Metaplane has amassed a solid customer base of over 140 companies including Imperfect Foods, Appcues and Reforge. It closed a Series A funding round in 2024 off of its successes so far. This investment is going towards the development of its AI-powered observability platform. In the longer term, it will move into other business areas beyond product. As companies continue to grapple with the reliability of their data, Metaplane is well-placed to build a significant business in this sector.
