Who you are

  • Experience leading a team responsible for large-scale ML Infrastructure
  • Strong product sense – you take pride in building well designed products that ML practitioners love. Passion for translating the needs of ML practitioners into infrastructure offerings with an eye toward automated and self-serve capabilities
  • Excellent at communicating context, giving and receiving feedback, fostering new ideas, and empowering others without micromanagement
  • 10+ years of total experience including 4+ years of engineering management
  • Experience with modern OSS ML frameworks such as Tensorflow, PyTorch, Ray
  • Experience with GCP/Google Vertex
  • Experience building and scaling Python ML infrastructure. Experience or exposure to Scala would be a huge plus!
  • Experience in ranking/retrieval domains (Search, Ads and Recommendations)
  • 4+ years of experience working with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Applied Math, Engineering or a related field
  • ML practitioner leader or individual contributor experience owning end-to-end ML functions for a product domain

What the job involves

  • Etsy is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Models team to build its next-generation machine learning infrastructure
  • As the Senior Engineering manager you will be responsible for leading a team that focuses on building a low latency real time ML infrastructure that enables internal Etsy ML teams to build and serve machine learning models
  • You will also lead the team to optimize and create efficiencies for the training and prototyping phases of the ML life cycle
  • The Models team is a platform that is part of Etsy's Machine Learning Enablement organization
  • The team is responsible for developing building blocks to run ML models at scale, such as Etsy’s Model Serving platform
  • Our mission is to enable efficient and impactful machine learning across Etsy
  • In this role, you will manage and grow a high-performing distributed team, drive the vision and roadmap of different Models infrastructure and ML optimization strategy
  • Reporting to the Director of Engineering, ML Enablement
  • We’re a fast-growing team with the goal of building tools and platform capabilities for scientists and engineers to run predictions with our model serving platform, train state of the art models, deploy machine learning models to production, and test hypotheses quickly
  • We support high visibility Machine Learning teams at Etsy including Search, Personalized Recommendations, Ads, Risk Decisioning etc
  • Manage and grow a team of outstanding machine learning engineers, software engineers, and tech leaders to design, build, and support Etsy’s machine learning systems such as our Model Serving Platform
  • Collaborate with other leaders at Etsy to drive the technical and strategic vision for advancing ML technology with a focus in Inference and training optimizations
  • Define the roadmap and supervise its execution. You will connect and coordinate business initiatives and team priorities
  • Provide technical guidance to the team to build an infrastructure that helps scientists to build state of the art ML models
  • Cultivate a strong engineering culture, responsible for delivering business results with the right quality and in a timely fashion

Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.

Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.

However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
