Company mission

To support thousands of patients on the journey to better health.

Role

Who you are

  • You have 5+ years experience architecting and building RESTful APIs
  • You have experience maintaining relational databases
  • You know how to handle errors, using informative logging and alerting systems
  • You are an advocate for data and system security
  • You are able to proactively identify areas for improvement

Desirable

  • You have experience in scaling up backend systems as user numbers grow
  • You know how to launch a product in multiple timezones and languages
  • You are looking to be an active member of the development team, contributing to team meetings, code reviews and working together to achieve success

What the job involves

  • As part of the engineering team at Habitual you’ll play a vital role in making our ideas a reality. You’ll be instrumental in leading on the backend systems which keep our products running smoothly. We're looking for someone who cares about our mission to help 10,000 patients reach a healthy weight in the next 12 months as much as we do, who brings energy and creativity to the team, and knows how to build scalable and robust systems
  • You will be working closely with Pip, our Head of Engineering, and Josie our mobile engineering whizz within our wider product team. Our tech stack is all Typescript: React Native on mobile, GatsbyJS for web and NodeJS (ExpressJS) on the backend, so there’s always opportunity to jump around the stack and really get stuck in - something we try to encourage!

Application process

  • 1. Apply via otta
  • 2. Intro call with Pip (20mins)
  • 3. Tech team chat (30mins)
  • 4. Meet our CEO founder (30mins)
  • 5. Technical assessment (choice of take home or pairing session)
  • 6. Meet the team (30mins)

Otta's take

Sam Franklin

CEO of Otta

Obesity is a global problem, and trillions are spent every year treating the outcomes of obesity. Weight loss is largely considered an aesthetic goal, weight loss treatments are systemically underfunded, and the health costs associated with obesity – including type 2 diabetes – are often ignored. Habitual wants to tackle obesity by treating the cause and help people lost weight.

The company harnesses innovations in digital therapeutics combined with rigorously validated weight loss tactics to deliver scalable, personalised, and effective treatment for obesity-related health conditions. Habitual's programme combines total diet replacement, digital habit change and virtual social support, and each member of the program is placed in a curated social support group based on careful analysis of each member’s personality, goals, and habit-building style.

Funding has been used to propel user growth, expand team size, and undertake clinical research trials which have helped Habitual go to market. Further, as the cost of diabetes-related healthcare has been by some estimates predicted to surpass $1 trillion a year by 2025, securing even a small portion of this market could result in future success.
