What the job involves

  • DoorDash seeks an Engineering Manager to lead the Conversations team, dedicated to providing customers with a seamless chat experience
  • By investing in Generative AI solutions and building automation for chat interactions across various platforms, the team aims to enhance customer satisfaction and retention while serving as both a product team and a platform for DoorDash's chat capabilities
  • As an engineering leader, you'll collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop engaging chat experiences that are scalable across web, phone, tablets, and operator tools
  • The Conversation team builds our platform for chat, phone, and SMS, all supported by our LLM-powered automation, ensuring customers are assisted with empathy throughout their experience
  • The team is instrumental in shaping and building automation and tooling within DoorDash's support ecosystem, leveraging chat and voice automations powered by Generative AI solutions
  • Lead and grow a team of exceptional backend and client-side engineers delivering end-to-end engineering solutions
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, business leaders, and key stakeholders to determine the team's roadmap and vision, and manage execution against that roadmap
  • Set the LLM vision together with our ML platform team to build fully automated chat and voice experiences
  • Provide architectural guidance and professional development for a team of 10+
  • Encourage innovation, teamwork, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, and outside-of-the-box thinking

DoorDash was an early entrant into the last-mile restaurant delivery business, which is now crowded with the likes of Uber Eats, Postmates and GrubHub. They offer restaurants an end-to-end delivery platform, generating new business and access to a network of delivery drivers.

To differentiate itself in the market, DoorDash focused on areas with fewer competitors and found success in this untapped market. Other factors, such as the company's targeting of restaurants which many not typically offer a delivery service, also contribute to its profitability. The company made its stock market debut in 2020 with one of the biggest IPOs of the year.

However, in light of increasing discontent around DoorDash's commission structure from restaurants, competition remains fierce. The business recently responded by publishing a transparent fee structure, but the number of options open to restaurants means DoorDash must fight to keep its customers loyal.
