Company mission

To create a world where anyone can belong anywhere.

Role

Who you are

  • 9+ years of experience in a hands-on software engineering role, including frontend web development
  • Strong expertise with TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Strong expertise with advanced JavaScript frameworks such as Backstage or advance experience with VS Code
  • Strong communication skills and experience working closely with other engineering teams across complex interfaces
  • Love collaborating via code reviews and architecture discussions, and are motivated to improve their teammates’ productivity
  • Expertise with working with documentation infrastructure like Backstage or similar, and/or working on IDE infrastructure like VS Code plugins or language server
  • Prior experience developing code leveraged by other developers
  • [Bonus] Experience (beyond configuration) working with bundlers, testing frameworks, editor integrations, frontend build/CI systems, observability tooling, or developer environments

What the job involves

  • The Web Platform’s mission is to empower engineers at Airbnb working within our Typescript monorepo to deliver innovative features with high velocity and quality by providing foundational libraries, frameworks, and tools for development, testing, and release
  • With a focus on web-specific technologies and integrations, the team serves as a nexus between product engineers and platform-agnostic infrastructure teams, as well as shaping and ensuring the health of the monorepo itself
  • The surface area of the team includes things like testing frameworks, developer environments, bundler and build system implementations, CI jobs, client libraries for observability and experimentation, editor integrations, and an internal web service framework
  • Projects on this team directly impact the productivity and experience of Airbnb developers working on web code
  • As an engineer on Web Platform, you will work on technologies that help shape an industry-leading end to end developer experience
  • Contribute across the team’s surface areas to directly move our core metrics (developer experience, developer velocity, debuggability, performance, and reliability) while reducing cost and providing new functionality to help make our team’s vision, and that of our broader org, a reality. Upcoming projects include modularizing our client observability libraries, code editor developer experience improvements, bundler enhancements, and improving CI debuggability
  • Partner with Airbnb product teams to understand their pain points, pilot proposed solutions, and encourage adoption of tools and frameworks
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of infrastructure teams as well as support product foundation teams as they build additional capabilities on top of the team’s offerings
  • Participate in all phases of software development from architecture/design through implementation, testing, and on-call
  • Support teammates in enabling code quality, operational excellence, and shared learning

Our take

When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.

Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.

Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
