Company mission

To improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation.

Role

Who you are

  • You're an enthusiastic and experienced app developer looking to use your iOS skills to create a consistent and predictable look & feel for all of our mobile products while improving developers' ability to ship new features quickly
  • You get excited about new swift features and compile improvements
  • You find delight in building the foundations and frameworks to accelerate the development by others, hiding away the complexities of the system
  • You are a diplomat who looks at the landscape and aligns engineers from different teams around a common pattern
  • You’re excited about scaling millions of lines of Swift code and hundreds of mobile developers
  • Our apps are used by millions of people, and we take great pride in our work. This means excellent development practices, careful code architecture, and an organization built around rapid releases
  • Our codebase is written entirely in Swift with modern design patterns and coding standards. We rely on 3rd party libraries and contribute back to the community (including the Swift language itself)
  • Experienced in delivering high-quality code
  • Experience working with designers and on internal developer productivity teams or projects
  • Strong experience with Swift
  • Experience with UIKit, declarative UI development and creating shared components
  • Familiarity with current design and prototyping tools (Figma, etc)
  • Ability to work with a low-ego, highly collaborative, cross-functional team
  • Excited about working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent presentation and documentation skills
  • Bonus Points: contributions to open source projects, experience with SwiftUI, experience with unidirectional and reactive programming

What the job involves

  • As a part of the UI & Architecture team at Lyft, you will be involved in creating the design system and our unidirectional architecture that all Engineers use to develop at Lyft
  • You will be part of a team that ensures quality across all facets of the app
  • As a qualified candidate, you have a record of leading projects to successful outcomes for users and the business
  • You are a strong cross-functional partner having worked closely with designers, a great communicator, and above all, you approach problems holistically as a unified system
  • Work collaboratively with our cross-functional team and partners including designers, Android engineers, Web Engineers, and other Mobile Infrastructure teams to plan strategically and define the future of mobile design systems at Lyft
  • Advance Lyft’s design system, Lyft Product Language, and DeclarativeUI library
  • Help to continuously modernize our iOS architecture
  • Inspire the team and our internal partners by bringing new ideas to the table that aim to ease developer friction and keep our codebase joyful to code in
  • Support iOS engineers from across the organization as they use the tools we build and leverage these interactions to improve our roadmaps and offerings
  • Improve our code base through continuous refactoring
  • Extend and implement our APIs
  • Keep up-to-date with iOS development
  • The work responsibilities of this role are expected to take place during business hours in your local Time Zone in the United States

Otta's take

CTO of Otta

Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.

Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.

In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
