Company mission

Tropic is on a mission to help innovative companies save time and money by delivering unprecedented visibility, control, and ease at every stage of their purchasing.

Role

Who you are

  • 4+ years of data analysis and/or data science experience, with a strong preference for those with prior experience in small working groups that required a “full-stack” mindset
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to produce and deliver data analysis that guided decision making or delivered significant value to customers
  • Experience improving data integrity through strong processes and standards that are shared with and understood by a larger organization
  • Strong SQL knowledge - use of CTEs, window functions and temp tables are common here. Writing readable SQL, and being able to interpret others’ code is a premium skill
  • Strong proficiency with Tableau-like BI and dashboarding tools. We use Sigma, but experience in anything is fine as long as you are willing to learn and adapt to different features
  • Strong analytical skills with good instincts around both content and the format of delivery to stakeholders. We don’t want everything to turn into a dashboard
  • Stakeholder management - we want someone who can deeply empathize with those they work with, defend and stick to agreed upon priorities and timelines
  • Motivated to learn new approaches and tools. We want someone who knows how to solve problems in more ways than just asking someone else how to do it
  • Strong prioritization and project management skills with the ability to own entire workstreams. Should be able to communicate priorities and timelines clearly
  • Strong bias towards collaboration
  • Experience with SQL orchestration tools and Git is a plus. We use Dataform, but dbt experience is totally transferable
  • Experience in more robust coding languages is a plus (Python, R and Java)
  • Experience working in a startup environment or another fast-paced environment where strategy and priorities quickly shift is a plus

What the job involves

  • We are looking for a Data Analyst to be an integral part of the data team responsible for providing Tropic’s targets, customers, partners and other relevant external stakeholders exceptional value from our data assets
  • The Data Analyst will be directly responsible for driving exploratory analysis, supporting the use of Tropic’s data products by both internal & external users, and leading the collection and distribution of new and impactful insights that create value for Tropic’s customers
  • This is a role positioned for growth
  • As the Data Analyst familiarizes themself with our Analytic stack and products, we expect them to spearhead new advancements in our Analytic, Data Science, or Data Engineering capabilities depending on their preference and aptitude
  • The ideal candidate will be curious about all elements of Tropic’s data workflows, be able to quickly specialize in unfamiliar tooling, and develop a keen understanding of how Tropic’s data can be better enhanced and platformed to maximize customer value
  • Conduct exploratory analysis that drives novel insights for the business and customers with an eye towards how such insights might be scalably delivered within the product
  • Partner with other departments to develop metrics and reporting resources that aid in decision making and increase transparency
  • Support Product teams as they leverage internal data products to improve Tropic’s platform
  • Identify risks and opportunities within our data products to help prioritize future development
  • Propose innovative data solutions to directly impact our current and future customers’ business outcomes; identify new datasets that Tropic should invest in to bring these innovation data solutions to our targets and customers
  • Champion our data products within internal teams, coaching our teammates through how they can best adopt and leverage the resources we maintain while also soliciting feedback that will inform how we can better serve the organization
  • Develop and curate our library of supported metrics and insights to drive a shared strategy with and understanding of our unique datasets

Otta's take

CEO of Otta

More businesses than ever are turning to SaaS solutions to help their operations run more smoothly, efficiently, and at a more affordable cost. However, with the broad gamut of game-changing services available, software procurement is becoming such a time-consuming process that companies can find themselves unable to conduct full research and negotiation to land the best deals.

Automated SaaS procurement company Tropic is looking to help companies make smart, money-saving decisions to pick the right SaaS for them. Founded in 2019, it has since landed substantial investment, along with attracting customers such as Vimeo, Intercom, and Qualtrics. Its product offerings provide solutions along the entirety of the SaaS procurement supply chain, enabling it to serve all the needs of its clients.

By developing a buyer-first model, the company is likely to win strong business from companies who may lack the technical confidence to navigate the SaaS market alone. And with digital transformation more widespread than ever, this is likely a substantial market in which Tropic has the chance to develop and grow.
