Role

Who you are

  • Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in a relevant field (e.g., Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, Data Science, Statistics) or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven experience and impact in a user research role, ideally within the technology or gaming industry
  • Strong expertise in designing, conducting, and analyzing surveys, experiments, and other quantitative research methods
  • Experience with a range of qualitative methods such as user interviews, contextual inquiry, journey mapping, and usability testing
  • Proficient in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Python) and data visualization tools
  • Experience working on products related to virtual worlds or social platforms is a plus, as well as experience in Trust and Safety research
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex data insights in a clear and compelling manner to diverse audiences
  • A proactive, self-motivated attitude with a passion for understanding user behavior and improving user experiences

What the job involves

  • We are seeking an experienced User Researcher, with a strong background in quantitative research methods, to join our team and play a key role in establishing and advancing research practices at our company
  • This individual will be responsible for driving critical research programs that will help us better understand the needs, motivations, and behaviors of creators, influencers, and our diverse community of VRChat users
  • The insights gathered will be instrumental in shaping our strategies for growth and expanding our reach to new audiences
  • The role will report into the VP of Design, and will work closely with cross-functional partners across product management, design, data science, engineering, and community to drive our understanding of current and potential users and creators
  • Design, conduct, and analyze qualitative and quantitative research studies to understand user behavior, preferences, and trends within the VRChat ecosystem
  • Understand motivations and segmentation of our current and potential users to help target strategies and growth toward specific audiences
  • Triangulate data from various sources (e.g., surveys, telemetry, feedback) to generate actionable insights that drive product decisions and growth strategies
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, and engineers to integrate research findings into product, business and design strategy
  • Mentor and guide teammates in the use of research methods and best practices
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements in research methodologies, applying them to our evolving product needs
  • Develop innovative solutions to conducting research in virtual environments
  • Contribute to building a culture of data-driven decision-making across the company

Our take

Virtual Reality is one of the technologies with the highest projected potential for growth. VRChat offers a free-to-play metaverse platform where users gather as avatars in virtual spaces to socialize and hang out, just as one would in real-life.

Whilst competitor Rec Room has a greater valuation, VRChat has positioned itself as the leading VR socializing-based product. It taps into a modern desire to form connections in digital spaces, with some users meeting their real-life partners in their virtual avatar form. When contemplating VR’s popularity, it cannot be denied that virtual realities enable freedom of self-expression, an attractive proposition perhaps for those who struggle with their identity and place in the real world.

VRChat is already widely accessible, as a PC and StemVR-compatible app that supports multiple VR devices such as Occulus, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed reality, and the Valve Index. 2021 funding has contributed to the development of a creator economy where creators earn financial rewards, as well as further expansion to more platforms. VRChat will continue to grow as pundits speculate on whether VR will be the future of social connection.
