Company mission

To build a new kind of bank that makes money work for everyone.

Role

Who you are

  • While this is not a role which requires hands-on-coding, we are looking for an experienced manager who has worked as a software engineer in previous roles, and has a strong technical and delivery background. ML experience is an added bonus
  • Delivery and Execution: Enjoys taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager
  • Engineering and Operational Excellence: Actively fosters a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams
  • You’re accountable for the technical outcomes your teams deliver alongside individual engineer performance and growth, so holding a high bar (and clearly articulating your expectations) is key
  • People Leadership: Is able to lead a group of around ~10 engineers and support, coach and develop them through their career with regular 1:1s and continuous feedback
  • Technical Influence: Partners with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Builds strong stakeholder relationships with other teams, and creates a focus space for engineers to do their best work
  • Organisational Wide Impact: Collaborates with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards

Desirable

  • If you have experience working on infrastructure or platform focused product areas

What the job involves

  • You’ll lead two teams within our Platform collective – Machine Learning (ML) Platform and Data Lifecycle.
  • Our ML Platform squad is formed around a mission to build and operate a world-class machine learning platform for engineers at Monzo, building tools and capabilities to support the end-to-end machine learning lifecycle
  • Our Data Lifecycle team is responsible for managing our offline data from its ingestion into our data warehouse, ensuring secure access throughout its lifecycle, and overseeing its eventual removal
  • They develop tools and processes to support both our internal needs and external compliance requirements, including GDPR
  • You’ll need to be an Engineering Manager who’s passionate about engaging directly with your customers
  • Your customers are Monzo ML and Data Engineers, and as such, you’ll need to be comfortable putting your Product hat on and deeply understanding their needs
  • You’ll influence and drive our roadmap, ensuring we’re working on the most impactful projects to help all of our engineers move even faster than they can today
  • This area will be yours to grow, partnering with other Engineering Managers and engineers across our Platform and Product teams to help shape our future

  • Loop Stage (3 hours 30 mins) The Loop stage consists of 3 x 60 min interviews that take place over 1-2 days (depending on your availability) and one 30 minute reverse interview (more details below)
  • Team and Org Management (1 hour)
  • An example based interview with 1-2 of our engineering leaders
  • They’re interested to hear examples from your previous experience on the teams you’ve led, how you’ve shaped and partnered with product, and the impact you had
  • System Design (1 hour)
  • You'll partner with a Staff or Principal Engineer on a technical whiteboarding exercise
  • Behavioural (1 hour)
  • Similar to Team and Org Management, this is an example based interview with 1-2 Engineering Leaders. This interview focuses on your people leadership style and core behaviours as an Engineering Manager
  • Chat with an Engineering Leader (30 mins)
  • At Monzo, we believe interviews are a two-way street. This will be your opportunity to ask us any questions about Monzo, engineering leadership or our teams – whatever’s on your mind
  • All things going well, you'll have completed the hiring process
  • Our average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability. You’ll have the chance to speak to our recruitment team throughout the process

Our take

Monzo is a challenger bank that fully operates online and offers a full range of current, savings, business accounts, and more. The speed of the challenger banks to provide a great experience has been impressive, and the number of competitors appearing has proven the consumer desire for innovation.

Monzo remains one of the popular online banks, with more than 6 million active users. The company faces competition from more traditional banks, such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, which have launched their own digital banks. However, the new technologies that the company is built on enable it to expand quickly (with fewer issues) than the incumbent players' offerings.

With an increasing amount of people switching banks, the company's ever-expanding suite of banking and financial services (such as its buy-now-pay-later offering) has resulted in Monzo receiving the second-highest net switching gains among digital challenger banks (just behind Starling).

After setting U.S. expansion plans aside in 2020, the company launched in the U.S. market in early 2022, partnering with Sutton Bank to provide its U.S. accounts. After several years focused on narrowing its losses, Monzo hit profitability in the first two months of 2023. In the same year, 2 million new customers joined, tallying its customer base at 9 million in 2024.
