Role

Who you are

  • 5+ years of product management experience or equivalent
  • Demonstrated success and strong execution track record in building and sustaining scalable platform products
  • Great interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication. You can collaborate and thrive in productive, healthy debate done with mutual respect and shared goals. You can make complex concepts accessible with clear communication
  • Experience working on products that support mobile device management, as well as developer interfaces (APIs, SDKs) or building platforms that support both internal and external users
  • Experience working with UX teams to design and build interactive user interfaces that help users intuitively understand and complete complex workflows and ordering processes
  • Experience working closely with one or more engineering teams to collaboratively design technical solutions, evaluate trade offs and execute on an ambitious backlog
  • Technically adept systems thinker, ideally with a Computer Science or equivalent degree or experience working as a software engineer

Desirable

  • Experience in 1 - 2 of the following areas are nice to have:
  • Networking (understanding basic networking like WiFi, DNS, etc.)
  • Exposure to logistics (moving/shipping physical objects)
  • Application/compute platforms (ex. PaaS. IaaS)
  • Building tools to facilitate deployment to developer platforms (such as Docker, AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Payments and/or eCommerce

What the job involves

  • Stripe Terminal helps our users extend their online presence to the physical world
  • The Terminal team’s mission is to make it as easy for businesses to accept in-person payments as the Stripe API has done for online payments
  • With Terminal, businesses can unlock in-person payments use cases that are right for their business model—whether it’s creating a superb retail experience, extending their website to a pop-up store, or enabling a mobile point-of-sale at their next event
  • We are investing in innovation to make it easier and faster for our customers to create their own unique, in-person commerce experience
  • To support that innovation we’re looking for a product manager to help lead and shape the future of our Terminal Device Platform - across device management, overall scalability and reliability, and creating the infrastructure for deploying applications to our Stripe payment devices at scale
  • The Device Management PM is responsible for the lifecycle of our Terminal devices
  • You will touch everything from ordering and shipping readers to deploying readers to configuring readers to updating readers to monitoring and troubleshooting readers to getting readers back in the case of an issue
  • You’ll be responsible for every aspect of the lifecycle of the device from the backend systems all the way to the frontend that our users (both internally and externally) use on a daily basis
  • Set a motivating multi-year vision and then break it down into measurable, meaningful milestones for the Device Management, Logistics Engineering, and Foundations engineering teams. This includes creating buy-in, crafting roadmaps and OKRs, and navigating trade-offs
  • Partner with software and hardware engineers and cross functional partners to research, discover, and deeply understand what our internal developers need to unlock value for our end users and build solutions that our end users directly interact with
  • Work closely with design teams to create and build dashboard interfaces enabling our users to manage their Terminal experience
  • Build empathy with our end users and the differentiation they aim to deliver for their merchants
  • Use metrics to inform your point of view and leverage analytics to measure success
  • Define product requirements and participate in sprint planning rituals to deliver against those requirements and the overall roadmap

Our take

Stripe, nowadays a FinTech giant, spent the first few years since its founding building up its payments business, which primarily consisted of providing an API to eCommerce businesses so that they could easily integrate a payments option in their apps or websites, where before there was none.

More recently, Stripe has started to accelerate its growth with a significantly larger range of financial services including cash advances and credit cards. They also plan to build incorporation services, fraud protection, and more, diversifying its revenue away from payments and differentiating itself from its competitors.

To further expand its position, the company is looking to triple its presence in Ireland, and extend its services to countries with vast customer potential, including Brazil and India. Its latest venture, coming atop significant new funds, is to partner with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT - a win-win collaboration that will monetize OpenAI’s flagship products and at the same time enhance Stripe with GPT-4, as it moves forwards with intentions to "build the payments foundation for tomorrow's AI economy."

Company values

  • Built for builders - The best reason to work at Stripe is that you will have colleagues who support and challenge you to do the best work of your career. We combine a big-picture mindset with obsessive attention to the details, down to the last pixel, API parameter, and word.
  • An environment of growth - We care about results more than CVs. We value managers who remain experts while developing talent and designing successful orgs. You can also have a big impact and advance far without managing anyone. We want you to take what you’ve been hired to do, and show us how it’s done – you might create something we never would have imagined. We have had account managers start a publishing arm, interns who have run business units, and hackathon participants who have built company-defining products.
  • Fast-paced, detail oriented - We balance innovation with scrupulous attention to every bit and byte involved in the movement of money – because we can’t do our job well unless we do both. When we started, we emailed every API error to everyone at the company. Now, we have more than 250 million API requests a day – and we still care about each one.
  • Voraciously curious - We wish there was a book that described what we need to do next (we’d even publish it), but since there isn’t, we all have to write it together. You will need to find answers to questions you’ve never been asked before. Sometimes, you will be the first person ever to contemplate a particular problem. We want people who devour books for fun and approach new challenges with eager curiosity.
