Our take

Online shopping was once a new frontier. Then came mobile shopping, and social media integration. The next milestone in the way we shop, though, is ‘conversational commerce’, and Modal is one of the companies leading the charge.

The idea is to make easy shopping even easier - no need to scroll and click, simply tell your voice assistant what you want to buy and consider it done. It’s currently linked with Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as a number of Smart TVs, and its technology supports voice browsing too, as well as customer analytics for brands. It focuses on food and drink (fashion, for example, being too visual for voice shopping) for now.

It’s using market-changing technology, but is one of a number of companies to be forging this new path. Its big-brand partnerships, including with Papa Johns and Unilever, give it an edge though, and it’s focussing on new integrations with a variety of different conversational media.
