Our take
Citibeats’ AI collects and visualises unstructured data in any language to identify social trends and deliver early warnings on critical issues. This in turn helps policymakers and companies better understand public opinion in real time and make faster, better decisions.
Founded in 2018, the company’s tech has proven extremely popular, used by the World Health Organisation to monitor online pandemic discourse, as well as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO, Twitter, and Facebook. Citibeats also created data observatories to respond to critical social needs during the Japan floods in 2019.
While big data analysis of human opinion is a sensitive area, it’s encouraging that Citibeats stresses the importance of ethical, privacy-protected AI, and intends to use its software for social good rather than simply profit. Its main uses are in the areas of sustainable cities, citizen security, migration, climate change and biodiversity.
